Past and Present

It’s amazing how quickly it all goes. You’re always told, but you never believe it until you realise it’s really happening. I always think that you shouldn’t look back and remember a time when you were happiest because it somehow seems ungrateful to what you have right now, the only time that’s really real in any tangible sense. However, I suspect that like me everyone can think of a time that stood out as the favourite or at least most fondly remembered part of their life. Although it seems ungrateful, perhaps it is just that part of your existence which most helped define you as you are now and therefore it seems only right to remember it fondly. The only harm is in wishing you could go back. Either for the sake of having another chance to somehow make it better or because you aren’t happy with the way you are living right now. How could you hope to make the time you remember as the best part of your life any better when it really couldn’t have been more perfect if you’d planned it that way. And how can you hope to make the time you have at the moment any better if you’re wishing for another chance at the past instead of making the most of now.
